What makes a GIF file large?
A GIF stores every frame as a color palette plus compressed pixel data. Long animations add many frames, and a high number of distinct colors adds bytes to every frame. Both factors push up the file size.
How much can I compress a GIF?
It depends on the image content. Reducing colors from 256 to 64 or 32, or dropping every other frame on a long animation, can cut the file size by a large percentage. Photographic GIFs shrink far more than simple flat-color graphics.
Will compressing a GIF reduce the image quality?
Yes, color reduction is lossy. Using fewer colors can introduce banding in gradients, though enabling Floyd–Steinberg dithering spreads the error across neighboring pixels and masks most visible banding.
Does compression preserve animation and transparency?
Yes. The animation is preserved and each frame keeps its transparency. You can optionally reduce the frame count for extra savings, and you keep full control over the final animation length.
Are my GIF files uploaded to a server?
No. A decoder and encoder run entirely inside your browser, so your GIF never leaves your device. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or shared, and the tool also works offline once the decoder has been loaded once.
Why is my compressed GIF still large?
Very high-resolution or long-duration GIFs are inherently large, and there is a limit to how far GIF's lossless LZW compression can go. Try stronger color reduction or frame skipping, or consider converting to WebP or a modern video format for better compression.
Tip: GIF is an old format. If the compressed GIF is still too large, consider converting it to WebP or MP4 — both are dramatically smaller at similar quality.
