How to Use the Word Counter

  1. Type directly into the text box, or paste an essay, article, email or caption.
  2. Watch the Words, Characters, Sentences and Paragraphs boxes update live.
  3. Select a reading speed (150, 200 or 250 WPM) to match your audience and re-check the reading time.
  4. Review the top keywords table to spot overused words; toggle the stop-word filter to include or hide common words.
  5. Click Copy Results to copy the full summary, or Download Report to save it as a .txt file.
  6. Click Clear to empty the box and start a fresh count.

Why Word Counts Matter

Word limits appear almost everywhere: college essays cap at 500 or 1,000 words, job applications ask for 250-word statements, and search results favor articles with enough depth to answer a question. A live counter removes the guesswork, so you can edit with the target in view instead of checking at the end.

Characters with and without spaces

Many platforms limit characters rather than words. SMS messages, social bios, meta descriptions and ad headlines each count every keystroke, including spaces. This tool shows both totals side by side: use characters with spaces for platform limits, and characters without spaces for translation pricing and dense-content checks. For related checks, see the Character Counter and the Reading Time Calculator.

Reading time and speaking time

A 1,000-word article takes about 5 minutes to read at the average 200 words per minute, and about 6 to 7 minutes to read aloud at 150 words per minute. Bloggers use these figures to label articles ("5 min read"), while speakers use them to fit a time slot. Because technical material reads more slowly, switch to 150 WPM for dense or academic text.

Honest limitations

This counter treats whitespace-separated tokens as words, so strings like "hello" and hello count differently, and abbreviations such as "e.g." may inflate the sentence count. It does not check grammar, spelling or readability grades. For very large pastes of tens of megabytes, live counting on each keystroke can feel slower on older phones.

Privacy and Client-Side Security

Privacy Guarantee: All counting and analysis occurs locally inside your browser. Your text is never transmitted, stored, or recorded on remote servers.

Many online counters send your pasted text to a server for processing, which is a poor fit for unpublished drafts, client work, or personal notes. TinyToolzz takes a different approach: every count runs in the page itself with plain JavaScript string operations.

Because nothing is uploaded, there is no waiting, no account, and no copy of your writing retained anywhere. Your text exists only in the tab's memory and is discarded when you close the page or click Clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Word Counter count words?
The tool splits your text on whitespace (spaces, tabs and line breaks) and counts each non-empty segment as one word. Hyphenated compounds and contractions such as well-known or don't count as a single word. Counting runs instantly in your browser on every keystroke.
What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?
Characters with spaces is the total length of your text including every space, tab and line break. Characters without spaces strips all whitespace first, which is the metric most social platforms, SMS limits and meta-description checks use.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time divides your word count by the selected reading speed. The default is 200 words per minute, the widely cited average for adult silent reading. You can switch to 150 WPM for slow or technical reading, or 250 WPM for fast reading.
Is there a text length limit?
There is no fixed limit. The tool handles essays, transcripts and long documents of several megabytes in memory. Extremely large pastes (tens of megabytes) may respond more slowly because counting runs on each keystroke.
Is my text uploaded to a server?
No. All counting happens locally in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never transmitted, stored or logged anywhere. Closing the tab or clicking Clear removes it from memory immediately.
How does the keyword density table work?
The tool lowercases your text, extracts words of 3 or more letters, optionally skips common English stop words such as the, and and of, then ranks the 10 most frequent words. Density is each word's count divided by the total word count, shown as a percentage.
