How to Use the Profit Margin Calculator

  1. Enter Cost (what you paid).
  2. Enter Revenue (selling price).
  3. Read the large profit card, badge, bar and stats for margin and markup.
  4. Click Copy Result to copy the summary, or Download Report to save a text file.

Understanding Margin vs Markup

Margin and markup both measure profit but against different bases. Margin answers what share of the selling price is profit. Markup answers how much you added to cost. Because revenue is cost plus profit, margin is always lower than markup for profitable sales.

Formulas

Profit = revenue - cost. Margin = profit / revenue x 100. Markup = profit / cost x 100. Cost 600 and revenue 1000 gives profit 400, margin 40% and markup 66.67%. Cost 199.99 and revenue 299.99 gives margin about 33.33%. For percent conversions see the Percentage Calculator and for tax on revenue the GST Calculator.

Loss and break-even

When cost exceeds revenue, profit is negative and both percentages are negative. Break-even is profit 0, margin 0% and markup 0%. Zero cost with positive revenue is 100% margin and infinite markup, shown as a large value.

Practical use

Retailers set prices using margin to hit profit targets on sales. Suppliers quote markup on cost. Converting requires both numbers, which this tool provides together with the cost share of revenue.

Honest limitations

This is a simple unit calculator without volume, fees or tax. It rounds to 2 decimals; very large or very small numbers may show 0.00 after rounding. Use as a quick estimate before full accounting.

Privacy and Client-Side Security

Privacy Guarantee: All calculations occur locally inside your browser. Your cost and revenue are never transmitted, stored, or recorded on remote servers.

Many pricing tools send cost and revenue to a server for a simple subtraction. TinyToolzz keeps everything in-page: profit math and percent calc run with plain JavaScript numbers.

Because nothing is uploaded, there is no waiting, no account, and no copy of your figures retained anywhere. Your values exist only in the tab's memory and are discarded when you close the page or click Clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is profit margin calculated?
Profit = revenue - cost. Margin = profit / revenue x 100. For example cost 600 and revenue 1000 gives profit 400 and margin 40%. Markup = profit / cost x 100, here 66.67%.
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Margin is profit divided by revenue (selling price). Markup is profit divided by cost. Margin is always lower than markup for positive profit. For 400 profit on 600 cost and 1000 revenue, margin 40%, markup 66.67%.
Can it show a loss?
Yes. If cost exceeds revenue, profit is negative and margin/markup are negative, indicating a loss. For example cost 1000, revenue 800 gives -200 profit, -25% margin.
Does it handle decimals?
Yes. Commas are ignored and decimals are kept to 2 decimals for currency. For example 199.99 cost and 299.99 revenue gives 100 profit, 33.33% margin.
Is my data sent to a server?
No. All math runs locally in your browser with JavaScript. Your amounts are never transmitted, stored or logged anywhere. Closing the tab or clicking Clear removes them from memory immediately.
What about zero revenue?
Zero revenue with non-zero cost is a 100%+ loss. Margin is undefined (division by zero) and markup is -100% or more. The tool shows an error for zero revenue when margin is requested.
