How to Use the Paragraph Counter

  1. Type directly into the text box, or paste an essay with paragraphs separated by blank lines.
  2. Watch the Paragraphs, Sentences, Words and Characters boxes update live.
  3. Check Avg. sentences per paragraph: aim for 2–4 for articles; higher values suggest splitting.
  4. Scan the paragraph breakdown table to find the longest paragraphs and divide them.
  5. Click Copy Results to copy the full summary, or Download Report to save it as a .txt file.
  6. Click Clear to empty the box and start a fresh count.

Why Paragraph Counts Matter

Paragraph structure decides whether text gets read or skipped. Teachers require a set number of body paragraphs, editors reject walls of text, and online readers abandon articles whose paragraphs run too long. Counting paragraphs by hand is tedious — and most people miscount when single line breaks and blank lines mix together.

Blank lines, not line breaks

A paragraph ends at a blank line, not at every line break. Addresses, poems and word-wrapped paste jobs contain many single line breaks but few real paragraphs. This tool follows the word-processor rule: only a fully empty line starts a new paragraph. For sentence-level detail, see the Sentence Counter, and for word totals the Word Counter.

Paragraph length and readability

Readability guides suggest 2–4 sentences per paragraph for screens and 4–6 for print. A paragraph stretching past 150 words usually hides two or three ideas that deserve their own space. Use the breakdown table to find those outliers: the longest-paragraph figure tells you where to start editing.

Honest limitations

Text without any blank lines — such as a single pasted abstract — counts as one paragraph no matter how long it is. The tool does not judge topic sentences or coherence, only structure. For very large pastes of tens of megabytes, live counting on each keystroke can feel slower on older phones.

Privacy and Client-Side Security

Privacy Guarantee: All counting and analysis occurs locally inside your browser. Your text is never transmitted, stored, or recorded on remote servers.

Many online counters send your pasted text to a server for processing, which is a poor fit for unpublished drafts, client work, or personal notes. TinyToolzz takes a different approach: every count runs in the page itself with plain JavaScript string operations.

Because nothing is uploaded, there is no waiting, no account, and no copy of your writing retained anywhere. Your text exists only in the tab's memory and is discarded when you close the page or click Clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Paragraph Counter detect paragraphs?
A paragraph is a block of text separated by one or more blank lines. Windows, Mac and Unix line endings are all normalized first, and lines holding only spaces or tabs count as blank. A block must hold at least one letter or digit to count.
Do single line breaks split paragraphs?
No. A single line break is treated as a wrapped line inside the same paragraph, matching how word processors behave. Only a fully blank line (or several) starts a new paragraph, so pasted poems, addresses and wrapped text count correctly.
What is average paragraph length and why does it matter?
Average paragraph length is total sentences divided by total paragraphs. Online readability guides suggest 2 to 4 sentences per paragraph for articles and blog posts. A high average with a long longest-paragraph value usually means some paragraphs should be split.
Can I see each paragraph separately?
Yes. The paragraph breakdown table lists every detected paragraph with its number, sentence count, word count and character count. It is useful for checking essay structure and spotting paragraphs that run too long.
Is there a text length limit?
There is no fixed limit. The tool handles essays, articles and long documents of several megabytes in memory. Extremely large pastes (tens of megabytes) may respond more slowly because counting runs on each keystroke.
Is my text uploaded to a server?
No. All counting happens locally in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never transmitted, stored or logged anywhere. Closing the tab or clicking Clear removes it from memory immediately.
