Everything runs in your browser with plain JavaScript. Drafts and scripts never leave your device.

How to Use the Reading Time Calculator

  1. Type directly into the text box, or paste an article, essay or speech script.
  2. Read the large reading time result, calculated at your selected speed.
  3. Switch the reading speed between Slow, Average and Fast to match your audience.
  4. Choose Custom and enter any speed from 1 to 2000 WPM for specialized cases.
  5. Compare paces in the table, and check speaking time if the text will be read aloud.
  6. Click Copy Results or Download Report to keep the summary, or Clear to start over.

Why Reading Time Matters

“5 min read” labels lift click-through because readers decide in seconds whether an article fits their schedule. Speakers face the same math from the other side: a 10-minute slot needs roughly 1,300 spoken words, and every extra paragraph risks the hook. Guessing either number produces clipped content or awkward silence.

Words per minute, explained

Decades of reading research place adult silent reading between 200 and 250 words per minute for non-technical prose, which is why 200 WPM is the default here. Technical, legal or academic text drops toward 150, while light fiction can exceed 300 for practiced readers. Speaking clusters tightly near 150 WPM across languages, since articulation — not comprehension — sets the pace. For raw counts behind these figures, see the Word Counter and the Sentence Counter.

Using the pace comparison

Label articles with the average pace so most readers finish near the stated time, and rehearse speeches against the speaking figure plus a 10 percent buffer for pauses and audience reaction. The custom row covers edge cases: children’s material near 100 WPM, auctioneers past 400, and screen-reader testing at exact rates.

Honest limitations

The formula assumes uniform difficulty, so image-heavy pages, code listings and tables all skew real times. It cannot measure comprehension or account for re-reading. For very large pastes of tens of megabytes, live counting on each keystroke can feel slower on older phones.

Privacy and Client-Side Security

Privacy Guarantee: All counting and analysis occurs locally inside your browser. Your text is never transmitted, stored, or recorded on remote servers.

Many online calculators send your pasted text to a server for processing, which is a poor fit for unpublished drafts, client work, or personal notes. TinyToolzz takes a different approach: every count runs in the page itself with plain JavaScript string operations.

Because nothing is uploaded, there is no waiting, no account, and no copy of your writing retained anywhere. Your text exists only in the tab's memory and is discarded when you close the page or click Clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is your word count divided by the selected reading speed in words per minute. A 1,000-word article at the average 200 WPM takes exactly 5 minutes. The result updates live with every keystroke.
Which words-per-minute speed should I choose?
Use 150 WPM for slow or technical reading, 200 WPM for average silent reading, and 250 WPM for fast reading of familiar material. Studies place adult silent reading between 200 and 250 WPM, so 200 is the safe default for general audiences.
How is speaking time different from reading time?
Speaking is slower than silent reading and is fixed at 150 words per minute, the standard rate for presentations and voice-overs. A script that reads in 4 minutes silently takes about 5 minutes and 20 seconds to deliver aloud.
What is the pace comparison table?
The table shows your text's reading time at slow (150 WPM), average (200 WPM) and fast (250 WPM) speeds side by side, plus a fourth row for any custom speed you enter. It helps bloggers label articles and speakers fit a time slot.
Is there a text length limit?
There is no fixed limit. The tool handles essays, scripts and long documents of several megabytes in memory. Extremely large pastes (tens of megabytes) may respond more slowly because counting runs on each keystroke.
Is my text uploaded to a server?
No. All counting happens locally in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never transmitted, stored or logged anywhere. Closing the tab or clicking Clear removes it from memory immediately.
