How to Use the Sentence Counter

  1. Type directly into the text box, or paste an essay, article or story.
  2. Watch the Sentences, Words, Characters and Paragraphs boxes update live.
  3. Check Avg. words per sentence: aim for 15–20 for general writing; higher values suggest splitting.
  4. Scan the sentence breakdown table to find the longest sentences and rephrase them.
  5. Click Copy Results to copy the full summary, or Download Report to save it as a .txt file.
  6. Click Clear to empty the box and start a fresh count.

Why Sentence Counts Matter

Sentence count is the backbone of readability. Teachers ask for a minimum number of sentences per paragraph, editors judge pacing by sentence variety, and readability formulas all start from words per sentence. Counting by hand is slow and error-prone — especially in long documents where abbreviations and dialogue inflate naive counts.

The abbreviation problem

Simple counters split at every period, so "Dr. Smith arrived at 9 a.m." becomes three sentences instead of one. This tool shields common titles (Mr., Dr., St.), Latin forms (e.g., i.e., etc., vs.) and time markers (a.m., p.m.) before splitting, then restores your exact text for display. For word-level totals, see the Word Counter, and for character limits the Character Counter.

Average length and readability

Most style guides recommend 15–20 words per sentence for general audiences and under 25 for news writing. A paragraph where every sentence runs past 30 words tires readers quickly. Use the breakdown table to locate those outliers: the longest-sentence figure tells you where to start editing.

Honest limitations

No browser-side splitter is perfect. Uncommon abbreviations, decimal numbers at line starts, and headings without ending punctuation can shift the count by one or two. The tool does not check grammar or grade readability. For very large pastes of tens of megabytes, live counting on each keystroke can feel slower on older phones.

Privacy and Client-Side Security

Privacy Guarantee: All counting and analysis occurs locally inside your browser. Your text is never transmitted, stored, or recorded on remote servers.

Many online counters send your pasted text to a server for processing, which is a poor fit for unpublished drafts, client work, or personal notes. TinyToolzz takes a different approach: every count runs in the page itself with plain JavaScript string operations.

Because nothing is uploaded, there is no waiting, no account, and no copy of your writing retained anywhere. Your text exists only in the tab's memory and is discarded when you close the page or click Clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Sentence Counter detect sentences?
The tool splits your text at sentence-ending marks (. ! ? and ellipsis), then keeps every segment that contains at least one letter or digit. Closing quotes and brackets after the mark stay attached to the sentence, and stray punctuation alone is never counted.
How does it handle abbreviations like Dr. and e.g.?
Common abbreviations such as Mr., Mrs., Dr., St., vs., etc., e.g., i.e., a.m. and p.m. are shielded before splitting, so their periods never end a sentence. The shielding is internal only: your text is displayed and counted exactly as written.
What is average sentence length and why does it matter?
Average sentence length is total words divided by total sentences. Readability guides suggest 15 to 20 words for general writing. A high average with a long longest-sentence value usually means some sentences should be split for clarity.
Can I see each sentence separately?
Yes. The sentence breakdown table lists every detected sentence with its number, word count and character count. It is useful for spotting run-on sentences and checking that each point in an essay stands on its own.
Is there a text length limit?
There is no fixed limit. The tool handles essays, articles and long documents of several megabytes in memory. Extremely large pastes (tens of megabytes) may respond more slowly because counting runs on each keystroke.
Is my text uploaded to a server?
No. All counting happens locally in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never transmitted, stored or logged anywhere. Closing the tab or clicking Clear removes it from memory immediately.
